Forgot to add one comment. I was living on
my former block in Denver a few years back. Thought one of the
neighbors talked familiar. He used to ride the bus to Haverhill
High with me and graduated the year before. He is now a mailman
in Denver. Larry Fasio.

I was born in Haverhill, in 1940. This site
is great to showing my grandchildren just where I was born and
grew up. I grauated in 1959 from the old high school. Many things
have changed, but most of the area still looks the same. I would
very much love to have a book about my birth city. Is there any
way you could send me one?

I am looking for information on the Boston
family. The only information that I do have is that my grandparents,
Charles and Elizabeth Boston lived in Haverhill with their three
daughters, Shirley, Edla ( my mother) and Elsye in the early 1900's.
Do you have anything on this family ? I would very much appreciate
any help at all. Thank you, Leanne Neurauter

I grew up in Haverhill, in the Lafyette square
area. Graduated from HHS in 83. Enlisted in the Navy and have
lived elsewhere since. I just visited earlier this month and was
shocked to see how run down some of the old neighborhoods had
become. Conversely, I was very pleased with the improvements made
to the Washington street area. I took my two kids to GAR park
(a hangout in my youth). Sadly, it has changed so much. Although
the Korean War Memorial is beautiful. Kudos to the Best Western
in Haverhill. and Kudos to this website. Although I would never
move back to Haverhill, it truly holds a special place in my heart.

I grew up in Kimball Tavern, built by ancestors
of mine in the seventeenth century. It is "Kimball Tavern",
Not, "Kimball's Tavern". It was a wonderful, fascinating
place and I continue to enjoy and love my memories of hiding from
the Indians behind the Indian shutters on the windows and in the
secret closets built to the size of a child. I'm delighted to
see the wonderful picture of my home on your website. If I had
access to unlimited funds, you would have them for preservation.
Since that is not the case, I can only say, "Please take
good care of 2 Salem Street, Bradford, Massachusetts." Cheers

I LOVED this website. Made me homesick. I
lived in Haverhill until 1978 when I moved to Florida. Been up
to visit a few times but am ready to come home. Sent the website
to my southern-born husband and he is ready to come up for a visit
and hopefully to relocate. I have really missed Haverhill over
the years and all the friends I left behind and never kept up
with. I will revisit this site as whoever took the photos did
an excellant job.

Ralph Cusano from Haverhill is my friend
from the Navy back in 1957-58. We served together from the NAS
Sanford, Florida. I was in Quonset Point, R.I. in 1958 later on,
visting Ralph and his Mom and Dad. His mother made a birthday
cake for me when I visited in December. I have not seen Ralph
since then but have communicated via Phone several times. I was
sorry to hear of his wife's (Marilyn)death. We still plan to get
in touch after all these years but who knows when! Haverhill was
a wonderful town then and I'm sure it is now. If any one knows
Ralph tell him his old Navy buddy Bill was checking up on him.
Best wishes to a grand ole town in a great country.

my grandmother, madeline skofield, maiden
name tilton, was related to all the tilton's of haverhill. And
my great great uncle was chief of police in haverhill around 1920.
His name was Police Chief Rollins, a relative of the tilton's
through marriage. Haverhill has a grat history and people should
be proud to live in a valiable historical city. My grandma told
me of a relative that lived up on washington street, where fantini's
bakery is now. In the early 1900's, this relative, James Tilton
would ride down town in his surry with the finge on top. There
are mant tilton's buried in lynwood cemetaty and are all related.
It is exciting to be a descedent of the tilton's.

JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT>>>>Haverhill is not a
dying city as some would think. I don't think so. Did you ever
think that your DOWNTOWN has enormous potential to become a vibrant
showplace and encourage shoppers and visitors to enjoy your beautiful
city. JUST THINK...What if the buildings on the rivers side of
Merimack St. from the Postoffice to the White Bridge were torn
down and replaced by a Mall. You could create an elevated Mall
from the street to the top of the flood wall. Traffic and parking
could be under the Mall. JUST IMAGINE an open Mall with trees
and a boardwalk along the river and shops for visitors. What a
spectacular view of the splendid MERRIMACK RIVER. The porential
for activities is limitless. Please don't think i"m knocking
your fine city, I was born in Haverhill (MT. Washington) and visit
family quite often.Maybe this type of thinking has been discussed
before or maybe it's a new idea to stimulate the city. Some critics
think the city is dying...I don't.I can't emagine the costs but
if the taxpayers could support the Boston "GREAT DIG",
with Federal help it could just happen. The Hanna Duston Monument
or the John Ward House could be relocated as a focal point. Respectfully:
John Gould

Cedar St. That was back when this section
of the acre was owner occupied and well taken care of. My dad
owned our home and took pride in it, as did our neighbors. Atlas
Market was the busy little store in the area, Nick and his wife
Fanny were well known by all. Next door to Atlas Market was John's
Barber shop, and then the "Bargain house". We loved
the bargain house, it was an indoor flea market, junk store. Then
further down on the corner of 8th avenue, was Jim's Variety. I
think everyone remembers Jim. The top of 7th Avenue was Pleasant
Spa. On the corner of 5th Avenue and Cedar St was another Variety
store. I also remember years back, there was another variety store
on the corner of 4th and Cedar, Cedar St Variety? There were a
lot of Variety stores back when I was young. There is still a
Tavern on 8th and Cedar, I knew it growing up as "The Office"..
or "8th Ave Tavern".. not sure what the name of it is
now. As times changed..John's Barber left, and in moved Nick's
Super Sub. We all remember old man Nick. He was quite a character,
but we all loved to hear his stories, and his laugh. This became
a hangout for teenagers. Then the Bargain house left, and a builder
converted it into Condo's. With a laundry-Mat/Tanning place on
the first floor. Wow.. what a surprise. Thats when the neighborhood
started to take on a whole new feel. Anyway, back to the past..I
walked to Winter St school for 1st and 2nd grade, until they closed
that school. Then walked to Fox school on Elm St. for 3rd and
4th. 5th thru 8th at St James on Primrose St. I attended Haverhill
High Class of 1983. Growing up in the acre, the place to hang
out, was 12th Avenue Park. There were activities during the summer
months supplied by the City. St James School used to have a small
area with swings and slides too. I remember they were the tallest
slides ever!! We were young, and they were very tall to us! But
for the most fun, it was 12th Ave. As we got older, Pilgrim Lanes.
Video Games were the lure. Pac Man, Mrs. Pac Man, Donkey Kong,
Donkey Kong Jr., Galaga, Centipede, and Millipede. My parents
sold their house in 1985, when they realized that the neighborhood
was starting to see a downward spiral. Other neighbors had sold,
and absentee landlords were renting out to less desirables, who
could careless about the house, or property. Which made living
in the middle of it all, sad, to say the least. I haven't lived
in that area now for over 20 years, and driving through there
now and again, to see the house I was born in, grew up in, and
lived most of my life in, is very heartbreaking. Haverhill is
a great City, and one of the great things about this city is its
ability to recover from deplorable conditions, and rejuvenate
areas that were once considered "bad".. I just hope
that one day, I can ride by my old house, my old neighborhood,
and show my kids, the "real" neighborhood I grew up
in. I am now living in "West" Haverhill. I think the
biggest problem with Haverhill, is they are allowing all the open
spaces the be built on. Leave some of the country appeal alone.
I love Haverhill. I want my kids to love it too.

so impressed with your beautiful houses and your very friendly
people and the way you cleared all that snow. We had 6 inches
of snow a month ago and it took 31/2 hrs to travel the 15 miles
home! Our daughter loves Haverhill so much that she has gone back
again, I can well understand why, it is beautiful. We have very
much enjoyed visiting both your site and Haverhill itself. We
are hoping to visit again in June

When I was born, I lived on Arlington St. My grandmother Rita
Pigeon lived on Fountain St across from some Comeaus and worked
much of her life in a diner near Pilgrim Lanes. My other grandmother,
Barbara Smart lived on West Lowell Av and was teacher at the Hannah
Duston School. My family recently donated a replica (crafted by
my mother) of the school to the Buttonwood Museum. I was born
at the old Hale Hospital in 1973, went to Burnham, Fox, Consentino,
and HHS during the Proposition 2 1/2 closedown. I recognize a
few names from the other sign-ins. I went to school with Parquettes
and Egans, and Ernie Ball, (not the Music store guy) had Marcouxes
for neighbors, hiked near the Davis' pasture. I had a Kathy Bouvier,
husband Bob, for third grade at Fox School (the hottest teacher
I ever had). Bob went to school with my mother. I am descended
from Sarah Folsom Heath. The best things about Haverhill are Ayer's
Village, The Old Kerry soda factory (now gone), Dairy Queen, the
best cemetaries for picnicing near old-old trees, Winnekinni Castle,
The street connecting NECC to Merrimac was once filled with raspberries,
and Rte 110 Skip's diner. Honorable mention to the Whittier House,
and the big stone underneath his bedroom.
