Comments:   I spent three years of my childhood in Haverhill (Bradford, actually). I still fondly look back on my time there. I attended CD Hunking School for 6th through 8th grade and traveled to Washington DC and our 8th grade trip. In the summer time my friends and I would walk the train tracks behind the candle pin bowling alley. Sometimes, if we were feeling particularly brave, we might hop a slow moving train or cross the railroad bridge into town. To this day, whenever I get an opportunity, I drive through the town and I'm immediately brought back to my childhood. I would like to express my thanks to Mr. Andre Dubus for inspiring me to look for the town on the Internet with his wonderful collection of short stories.

Comments:   Hello, everybody!

Just this evening I learned that some of my ancestors came from Haverhill. Thomas Whittier (the great-great-great-grandfather of my great-great-great-grandfather) was one of the earliest residents of Haverhill; he married a woman named Ruth Green; and his daughter Hannah married my ancestor Edward Young on 30 May 1683. Their son Thomas, who left for Newmarket, NH, early in the 18th century, was born there in 1691 and spent his childhood there.

I have taken the wonderful photo tour, and I have so many questions. Do the Haverhill Public Library and the Haverhill Historical Society have any records on my ancestors? Are there any Whittiers and Youngs in the Hilldale Cemetery? And am I distantly related to John Greenleaf Whittier the poet, who was born in Haverhill in 1807? If anybody has any information about any of these matters, please drop me an e-mail at joequinn@frontiernet.net.

Comments:   I just want to add to my earlier comments regarding looking for the GORMAN family of Haverhill. My husband and I visited the Haverhill Historical Society this past Sunday and found it very interesting to say the least. We also found the home my Great-Grandfather built and my Grandfathers home as well. From there we went to Hilldale Cemetary. We we absolutely shocked to see how many headstones are laying on the ground, no doubt the work of vandals. It brought tears to my eyes. Does anyone know if this was done recently or over time? It must be 60% of the stones are turned over...how sad... Is Hilldale a city owned cemetary? Anyway, we did find my family lot, in good condition thank goodness! Looking forward to the geneology room at the library in a couple of weeks.

Comments:   Great website! I'm researching my Dad's family, The Gorman's of Haverhill, MA. My great grand-father was the owner of N.F. Gorman shoes. My great grand mother was Nellie Francis Sargent. The shoe factory was dissolved in 1919. Other names of interest to me would be their children, James Gorman, John Gorman, Alfred Gorman, Medora Gorman, Frances Gorman, William Gorman, Henry Gorman, Frank (my grand dad) Gorman, Esther Gorman, and Arthur Gorman. My dad's name was Arthur ( Red) and he was born in Haverhill in 1927. He had one brother, Russell, and two sisters, Middy and Francis. If anyone has any info I'd love to hear from you!
