Comments: I was born in Haverhill in 1947.I was a graduate of Haverhill High, class of 1965. I miss Haverhill very much and constantly remember my friends of that time. Tonight is a cool fall evening here in South Carolina. I hear children playing outside in the leaves as I type. Tonight is a reminder of those same types of nights in Bradford. I miss Haverhill, you could burn leaves then and I like the smell.

I lived in Haverhill until 1993. Went off to study
at the University of Arizona. I wish that you were more
careful in how you present the facts of Hannah Dustin.
She did not kill 10 "captors". The children were
not her captors. Why is it so difficult to just state
facts of her abduction as they are known and let
each person decide for themselves if her actions were
heroic. Her actual abductors left her behind with
members of their tribe. These were "Praying"
Indians. It is also interesting to note that they
had relative freedom to move about and that Samual
Lennardson had access to weapons. The people Hannah killed
were two old men, women and children.
Note: I went the University of Arizona to study
American Indian Studies.

I enjoyed your site very much. I was born in Haverhill in 1936
and attended Groveland St., Crowell, Smiley schools and graduated
Haverhill High in 1954. My father had a Dairy Queen and clam stand
at the corner of Groveland St. and Lincoln Ave. He sold it in
1955 and we moved to Rochester, NH and he opened a Drive-In Resturant
in Rochester. I had a great childhood in Riverside. At one time
we lived on Coffin Ave. (on the river by Groveland Bridge. We
could hear the roaring sounds of Pines Speedway when they had
the midget car races.
I remember my sister and I taking dance lessons from Doris Caffrey
and the recitals that were held at the Colonial theater. What
a beautiful place that was, There was an orchestra pit and box
seats on each side. What a shame that was torn down. The recitals
were like Broadway productions with an orchestra and lots of scenery.
We even had to put some kind of white stuff on us for the lighting
I think.
I remember they closed off one of the streets Off Lincoln Ave.
so the kids could slide down the hill. I can't remember but there
must have been sand or something at the bottom to stop us. It
seems that kids had much more to so back then to keep out of trouble.
A few years ago, I made a wedding cake for my neice and attended
her wedding at Winnikinni Castle. It was a thrill for me to be
in the castle as I had often just seen it from the road when it
had a lit cross on it at Christmas time and I wondered what it
must be like. My mother-in-law had a farm on Kenoza St. that had
a big hill in back boardering Winnikinni Park. From the top of
the hill you can see Groveland and West Newberry, it's a beautiful
sight.
I hope more people that lived in Haverhill find your site and
write in. Keep up the good work.

Why waste cyberspace with a dump like this. Haverhill was probably a nice place in the 18th century, I can assure you that it is a hellhole currently! WHAT A DUMP

Can someone please tell me what the story is with the "old"
Woolworth building on White's Corner? Woolworth closed that store
down around 1953-55 and I see that it is still closed! I would
think that the city would have bought it or taken it by emmnent
domain and torn it down to as the starting point of a "Riverside
Park".
I've long held the position that Haverhill should have restricted
building/renovations on the river side of Merrimack St and developed
the land aside as a city park. You have one of the most beautiful
rivers in the country and you hide it behind vacant buildings!

The Republicans COULD HAVE taken great pride in the saving of Bradford College by spending some of their money. But, the college is gone and they still have their money!!
